Job Opportunity: Outreach & Compliance Officer (Permanent, Full-time)

About the role....

On behalf of the Municipal Joint Services Board, the Lunenburg Regional Community Recycling Centre (LRCRC) serves residents and businesses in the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg and the Towns of Bridgewater and Mahone Bay.


The Outreach/ Compliance Officer’s primary role is to ensure effective delivery of the LRCRC education, outreach, and compliance programs with respect to the Solid Waste Collection and Municipal Solid Bylaws and Nova Scotia Solid Waste-Resource Management Regulations. This includes curbside waste collection inspection and waste audit at the transfer stations.

The LRCRC education and outreach division is part of the Administrative team of the MJSB. The Outreach/Compliance Officer forms part of the support team in the LRCRC office.

Is this you?
As the ideal candidate you have:
• Grade 12 or higher.
• Three years’ experience in public relations and administration preferred.
• Ability to work effectively with the public is essential.
• A valid Nova Scotia driver’s license is required.
• Excellent organization and time management skills are required.
• Ability to compile accurate written records detailing observations and actions taken.
• Must possess excellent written communication skills.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Publisher, Excel and Outlook are required.
• Ability to work flexible hours (working before or after regular hours or working weekend outreach events).


Working Conditions:
Work requires planning, time management and prioritization to effectively deal with workload. This position may involve confrontational situations. This position also requires work outdoors and exposure to a variety of weather conditions. Work may require moving and lifting items in accordance with waste volume weight limits outlined in the municipal waste by-laws.

Salary range: $46,000 to $63,000. 40 hours per week.

Job Opportunity: Controller (Permanent, Full-time)

About the role....

The Controller is accountable for all Municipal Joint Services Board financial matters. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining an adequate system of accounting and control.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Controller supports and enhances management activities, and ensures that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.

The Controller is a core member of the Management team. Responsibilities include:

• Establish and maintain a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate risk and enhance the accuracy of the company's reported financial performance.

• Lead budgetary process.

• Cost control, monitoring and provision of Financial advice to Finance and Budget Committee.

• Mentor and supervise admin/accounting staff, Education and Enforcement as well as Scale Operations of the Solid Waste Division.

Is this you?

As the ideal candidate you have:

CPA qualification, member in good standingExperience in personnel managementAt least five years' accountancy experience within a financial management role.Experience with preparing budgets, management accounts and year end financial accounts.Extensive experience with and thorough working knowledge of computerised accounting systems and spreadsheets.Ability to work independently and on own initiative, within a team environment.Ability to work well under pressure while maintaining attention to detail.Willingness to work in a co-operative environment.Hands-on experience with payroll.Experience with preparation for year-end audit.Good verbal and written presentation skills.

Salary range: $71,272 to $98,041. 40 hours per week.

Job Opportunity: Waste Diversion Intern (Two Temporary Positions)

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Must be a Canadian citizen or entitled to work in Canada;
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30;
  • Must be a full-time student and intending to return to school in fall 2020;
  • Is not a member of immediate family of a Municipal Joint Services Board employee;
  • Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
  • Be able to work independently, with minimal supervision;
  • Must have previous experience working with the public;
  • Hold a valid NS driver’s license;
  • Have basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Problem-solving skills are important;
  • Must posses excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Demonstrates interest in future employment in the environmental or ‘green’ sector is considered an asset; and
  • Presentation skills are considered an asset.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The intern will focus upon educating residents and businesses within the partner municipalities about the clear bag garbage program, promoting paper green cart liners for organics collection and educating residents about recent changes to curbside waste collection.

This position will be 35 hours per week. Rate of pay will be $14.50 per hour. Work term will begin immediately, ending August 28, 2020.
