Residents of the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg, the Town of Bridgewater or the Mahone Bay may drop it hazardous waste off at the depot for free! The depot is located at 908 Mullock Road, Whynott's Settlement. 

IDENTIFY HAZARDOUS WASTE - look for these symbols:

Hazard Symbols

FLAMMABLE or ignitable wastes can create fires under certain conditions, are spontaneously combustible or have a flash point less than 140° f.

POISON or toxic wastes are those containing concentrations of certain substances in excess of regulatory thresholds which are expected to cause injury or illness to human health or the environment.

EXPLOSIVE wastes can cause explosions, toxic fumes, gasses or vapors when heated, compressed or mixed with water.

CORROSIVE wastes are acids or bases that are capable of corroding metal containers such as storage tanks, drums and barrels.

Fridges, freezers, dehumidifiers and water coolers cannot be collected at the curb if they contain gas. These items must display a refrigerant-free sticker.

Drop them off free of charge at the Recycling Centre's Household Hazardous Waste Depot, 908 Mullock Road, Whynott's Settlement. Gases will be drained.

  • Bio-medical or pharmaceutical - drop off expired medications, used sharps and lancets at your local pharmacy.
  • PCBs, Radioactive Substances or Explosives - Contact the RCMP to arrange disposal of ammunition, fireworks, flares or fireworks call (902) 527-5555.
  • Unidentified HHW - all wastes must be identified.
  • HHW from outside District of Lunenburg, Town of Mahone Bay or Town of Bridgewater - contact your Town/Municipality for disposal locations.
 

GLYCOL (ANTIFREEZE) & OIL RECYCLING PROGRAM

As of January, 2020 drop off the following glycol and oil-related products for free at the Community Recycling Centre:

Oils:

Petroleum or synthetic derived crankcase oil, engine oil, gear oil, hydraulic fluid, transmission fluid, heat transfer fluid, and lubricating fluid for machinery or equipment.                                     

Filters:

Spin-on style or element style fluid filters for hydraulic, transmission or internal combustion engines, diesel fuel filters, storage tank fuel filters, household furnace oil filters other than gasoline filters.

Oil, glycol and DEF Containers:

Containers with up to 50 litre capacity for oil, glycol or DEF product. Antifreeze and oil jugs will still be accepted in the blue bag (with cap on), if residents do not wish to drop them off.

Aerosol Containers:

Aerosol containers for oil products and auto part cleaners.

Glycol:

Ethylene or propylene glycol for vehicle or commercial engine coolant.

Drop off aerosol cans at the HHW depot for proper handling, do not put in your blue bag or garbage. Aerosol cans may explode on the waste collection truck if compacted. 

SAFE SHARPS DISPOSAL

Syringes, needles and lancets must be put in a safe sharps container and returned to a local pharmacy. Containers can be picked up FREE OF CHARGE, at any pharmacy or Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) supply centre. Read about the Safe Sharps Program

The Household Hazardous Waste depot does not accept sharps. Sharps and blood testing lancets cannot be placed in your garbage bag or blue bag!

 

 

 

MEDICATION DISPOSAL

The provincial Medication Disposal Program allows patients to return medications they no longer need or “dead drugs” to their local community pharmacies for safe disposal. There is no cost to the public to use this service.

Nova Scotia’s Medication Disposal Program is administrated by the Pharmacy Association of Nova Scotia (PANS) and paid for by pharmaceutical companies. Placing medication in the garbage or flushing it down the toilet can be dangerous for children, pets or the environment.
