Lunenburg Regional Community Recycling Centre

Residents of the District of Lunenburg, Town of Bridgewater and Town of Mahone Bay can place two bulky landfill items curbside every two weeks on garbage collection day, throughout the year.

Wood and metal items are collected during special fall collections for each area. Wood and metal items are not collected bi-weekly. Wood and metal items are collected during a fall collection. These wastes are recycled and diverted from landfill.

Bi-Weekly Bulky Landfill Collection Guidelines: Items can measure up to 1.8 m (6 feet). Items may weigh up to 100 kgs (220 lbs) in the District and the Towns.

Collectible bulky landfill items: mattresses, boxsprings, couches, upholstered chairs, pillows, plastic furniture, rugs, carpet, toilets, sinks, acrylic bathtubs, doors with windows, vinyl siding, drywall, insulation, laundry baskets, plastic totes, kids swimming pools, artifical Christmas trees, ceramic lamp frames and shades.

Dishwashers that have plastic doors and plastic interiors are collected during bi-weekly, bulky landfill item pick up. Dishwashers that have metal doors and metal interiors are collected during fall wood and metal collection.

Recycling and composting became mandatory in Nova Scotia in 1996/97. Solid Waste Collection and Disposal By-laws and waste sorting brochures explain how waste must be separated.

Wood & Metal	A combined volume of 4 cubic metres of wood and metal collected annually during special Fall collection. Electronics	Households and businesses can put out 3 electronic items on their pick up day during fall electronics collection. Items Not Collected Curbside	Electronics - Can be delivered to the Community Recycling Centre free of charge. Lightbulbs - Can be delivered to the Community Recycling Centre free of charge. Batteries - Can be delivered to the Community Recycling Centre free of charge. Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) - Residential HHW can be delivered to the Community Recycling Centre free of charge. Sharps - Can be delivered to a local pharmacy free of charge. , using a sharps bucket provided by a pharmacy. Sharps cannot be placed in garbage or blue bags! Tires - Four tires can be delivered to a local retailer free of charge. Tires must be taken off rims. Asphalt Shingles - Can be delivered to the Community Recycling Centre or a regulated construction & demolition waste landfill. Fees apply. Fridges, freezers, water coolers and air conditioners cannot be collected curbside unless professionally drained and stickered first. These items can be delivered to the Community Recycling Centre free of charge.

Broken Glass	Items that are sharp or broken such as plates, glasses, knives, sawblades and glass items must be placed in a sealed container or box and labelled "broken glass or sharp". Place this beside your garbage bags.

Cancelled Collections	Collection can change due to weather, road conditions and construction. Collection cancellations are aired on CKBW (98.1 FM), posted on the home page of this website, the Lunenburg Regional Community Recycling Centre's Facebook page. Call 902-543-2991 to listen to a message concerning cancellations and waste site closures. Waste Rejections	The waste hauler and the curbside inspector regularly inspect waste to ensure recyclable and compostable wastes aren't landfilled. If waste is not separated properly or prepared incorrectly it could be rejected. If it is, follow the instructions on the sticker. Waste must be re-sorted and placed at the curb during the next collection. Call the phone number on the sticker if you have questions.
Spring Weight Restrictions	A number of roads in the District of Lunenburg are weight-restricted each year due to spring thaw. This can include paved and gravel roads. Look for road restriction signs before putting your waste out for collection in February, March and April. If your road is restricted, place your waste at the intersection with the nearest unrestricted, public road by 7:00 am on collection day. Weekly Green Cart Collection takes place during the warmer months in Bridgewater and Mahone Bay. Leaf and yard waste is not collected during recyclables collection weeks (Blue Weeks: blue bags, paper and cardboard). Check your calendar for collection dates.

Bears & Waste Storage:

Dept. of Natural Resources & Renewables: When bears come into a residential area they are usually looking for food. Bears like to eat many of the same foods we enjoy, so we need to be careful about how we handle food and food waste to minimize the odours that attract bears.

When a bear smells food odours coming from a green cart, garbage container, or even a barbecue, the bear regards this as a convenient source of food and it will return to the site again and again. Not only is this annoying for us, it means the bear will become dependent on people for food and may become invasive and destructive. Bears can smell food over 1 km away.

Businesses and residents are required to sort their waste properly in Nova Scotia.

Setting up an effective waste management program for a business can be challenging. Businesses can contact the Community Recycling Centre for assistance. To ensure programs success, management, staff, students, custodians/janitors and the waste hauler must be involved.

When setting up a waste managment, collection services should be reviewed to determine which collection containers are needed and how often they should be emptied. Businesses require collection containers for:

Cardboard
Recyclables
Paper
Garbage
Green cart(s) for organics waste and papertowel

When a business separates their waste correctly, it saves them money. Most waste haulers provide different sized containers, depending on your needs. They may even offer dividers for your collection container so that you only need to rent one rather than two separate ones.

Businesses in the District of Lunenburg, Bridgewater and Mahone Bay can deliver recyclables, paper and cardboard to the Community Recycling Centre free of charge during regular business hours. Waste must be curbside by 7:00 am in the District of Lunenburg and 8:00 am in the Towns. Collection times may vary according to road conditions, road construction or waste volumes.

Seasonal collection is offered on approved, private roads from Victoria Day until the Friday following Thanksgiving in the District of Lunenburg.
Scheduled collection is every two weeks. Waste cannot be placed curbside sooner then 5:00 pm the day before collection and no later than 7:00 am the day of collection.

Clear bags are required for garbage collection. One non-transparent (black) garbage bag is permitted per household, per collection; this bag must be properly sorted.

If you often miss collection day or will be leaving before the next collection, you may:

Ask a neighbor to put your waste out on the appropriate day.
Put a garbage box by the road to keep animals away from your waste. Call 1-855-530-3324 for information about where to place the box.

In winter, private roads receiving year round collection must plow snow and sand (if necessary) by 7:00 am on collection day. Turning areas must be cleared too. If your road cannot be maintained properly, bring your waste to the intersection your road and the nearest public road by 7:00 am on collection day. If residents wish to temporarily suspend collection due to concerns about road damage (ie. during wet spring conditions), call 1-855-530-3324.
