Construction & Demolition Waste Disposal
|
In Nova Scotia, Construction and Demolition (C&D) wastes must be disposed of properly. Guidelines have been developed and are administered by Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change (see lists below). Structural demolitions generate large amounts of material that can be reused or recycled. Rather than demolish an entire building, consider 'decontructing' all or part of a building. Deconstruction is the orderly dismantling of building components for reuse or recycling. In contrast to demolition, where buildings are knocked down and materials are co-mingled, deconstruction involves taking apart portions of a building or removing their contents with the primary goal being to reuse or recycle the materials. Deconstruction saves money. Sorted construction wastes delivered to the Community Recycling Centre cost less per tonne for disposal. The Community Recycling Centre also offers Mixed C&D waste rates for mixed construction waste loads. View a list of wastes accepted in mixed C&D waste loads. View all waste tipping fees. |

| Clean Wood: All brush and wood that is free of glue, paint, stain, wire and plastic. Customers are asked to remove spikes and pieces of metal fastened to wood which are longer than 6" or thicker than 1/2". Clean waste wood is ground up and burned as bio-fuel. Pieces of metal larger than 6" can damage the grinding equipment. |
| Painted Wood: Plywood and painted wood. Creosote-treated wood is billed at a landfill rate. |
| Pressure-Treated Wood must be sorted separately (as of April 1, 2023). The Province of NS announced changes to construction and demolition waste management in order to reduce environmental impacts created while managing pressure-treated wood. Pressure-treated wood must now be sorted and disposed of differently. Tipping fees have been adjusted to address the new disposal requirements. |
Shingles: Asphalt shingles must be free of house wrap, metal, wood and wire.
|
Metal: All metal items including fridges, freezers, de-humifiers, wire, plumbing fixtures, siding, doors, empty paint cans and window frames. Refrigerant gases are drained from fridges, freezers and de-humidifiers free of charge at the Community Recycling Centre. Metal is accepted free of charge. |

SECURING YOUR WASTE WHILE DRIVING
Failure to secure your load can cause traffic accidents, flat tires and roadside litter. Here are some tips:
- Ensure waste cannot move or shift during transport or sudden stops. Push and pull restrained wastes to test for movement before transport.
- When tarps and netting are used, ensure loose items such as small pieces cannot escape around the sides or through gaps in trailer walls.
- Wrap loads of asphalt shingles and drywall with a tarp on top, underneath and surrounding the sides. This contains nails and screws, preventing them from falling off during transport.
- Netting and tie downs are useful for restraining branches.
- Always monitor your load while driving.
