Town of Mahone Bay

Starting in January 2018, Mahone Bay residents will be able to place one bulky item curbside for collection during regular garbage collection

week (Green Week). For more information, please call Town Hall at (902) 624-8327.

This does not apply to residents in the Town of Bridgewater or the Muncipality of the District of Lunenburg.

Munincipality of the District of Lunenburg

Maximum weight per item is 140 kilograms (308 pounds). Maximum pile size for landfill and metal combined is 4 cubic metres (5.2 cubic yards). No item longer than 1.8 metres (6 feet) in length.

Landfill

Furniture: No longer than 6 feet.

Carpet: Bundle, bundles no longer than 6 feet.

Insulation: Bag or bundle pieces of insulation.

Windows (wooden and vinyl): Place carefully to avoid smashing glass.

Metal

Fridges, Freezers, De-humidifiers and Water Coolers: gases must be drained and display the Nova Scotia Environment ‘Refrigerant-Free’ sticker to be colleced at the roadside. These items may be dropped off free of charge at Recycling Centre, 908 Mullock Road, Whynott's Settlement.

Small Auto Parts and Lawn Mowers: Drain lubricants and coolants before placing roadside. Engine blocks and transmissions will not be collected.

Swing Sets: Break down, Pieces no longer than 6 feet.

Metal Drums: cut 200 gallon drums in half; drain 45 gallon drums and remove one end.

Hot Water Tanks: Drain before placing roadside.

Empty Metal Paint Cans: Remove lid for collection. Empty plastic paint cans go in landfill pile, remove lid.

Unused, Wet Paint: drop off at local Enviro-Depot or the Household Hazardous Waste Depot, 908 Mullock Road, Whynott's Settlement.

Propane Tanks: Return to dealer if tank hasn't expired or drop off at Household Hazardous Waste Depot, 908 Mullock Road, Whynott's Settlement.

Wood 

Maximum pile size for wood is 4 cubic metres (5.2 cubic yards). No item longer than 1.8 metres (6 feet) in length. Remove spikes, hinges longer than 6 inches, metal, vapour barrier and insulation from wood.

  • Wooden windows cannot be accepted with wood, please place with landfill items.

 

Town of Bridgewater 

Maximum weight per clean-up item is 50 kilograms (110 pounds), maximum volume collected is 2 cubic metres (2.6 cubic yards). Items may measure up to 1.5 metres (5 feet) in length.

Landfill (Separate landfill and metal items from wood items)

Furniture: No longer than 5 feet.

Carpet: Bundle, bundles no longer than 5 feet.

Insulation: Bag or bundle pieces of insulation.

Windows (wooden and vinyl): Place carefully to avoid smashing glass.

Town of Mahone Bay

Starting in January 2018, Mahone Bay residents will be able to place one bulky item curbside for collection during their regular garbage collection week (Green Week).

Residents may place up to six bags of garbage for collection every Green Week; one of those garbage bags can be replaced with a single bulky item. 

The single bulky item may weigh up to 55 lbs.

Items Not Collected

Electronics
TVs, VCRs, DVD players, computers, printers, phones, home theatre systems, audio/visual systems cannot be placed for roadside collection. These items must be dropped off at a depot for recycling. The Community Recycling Centre accepts electronics at 908 Mullock Road, Whynott's Settlement. Full list of accepted items.

Tires 
Passenger tires cannot be collected during Clean Up. Drop off up to four tires at local tire retailer, at one time, free of charge.

Household Hazardous Waste 
Residents of the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg, Town of Mahone Bay and Town of Bridgewater may drop off hazardous waste off at the Hazardous Waste Depot at 908 Mullock road, Whynott's Settlement. Acceptable items include: 

Corrosives, explosives, flammables and poisons, unused paint, preservatives, waste oil, diesel fuel and BBQ propane tanks.  Full list of accepted items. 

Fireworks, ammunition and flares (explosives) are not accepted at the . Contact the RCMP at (902) 527-5555 or (902) 634-8674 to arrange disposal of explosives.

Asphalt Shingles

Shingles are not accepted during clean-up. Drop them off at the the Community Recycling Centre or any regulated construction and demolition waste facility. A tipping fee is charged. For more information, call (902) 543-2991.
