Collection Limits

Munincipality of the District of Lunenburg

Maximum weight per item is 140 kilograms (308 pounds). Maximum pile size for landfill and metal combined is 4 cubic metres (5.2 cubic yards). No item longer than 1.8 metres (6 feet).

Landfill

  • Furniture and carpet: cut longer pieces to a maximum 6 foot length. Please bundle carpet.
  • Mattresses and insulation: please bag or bundle pieces of insulation.
  • Windows (wood & vinyl).

Metal

  • Fridges and freezers: must have the doors removed and must display the green Nova Scotia Environment ‘Refrigerant-Free’ sticker.
  • Small auto parts will be collected if all lubricants and coolants have been drained. No engine blocks or transmissions will be collected.
  • Please drain all gas and oil from lawn mowers.
  • Break down swing sets into pieces no longer than 1.8 metres (6 feet).
  • Drain 200 gallon drums and cut in half; drain 45 gallon drums and remove one end.
  • Metal paint cans which are empty and dry may be placed in your metal pile, with lids removed. Cans containing liquid paint must be dropped off at your local Enviro-Depot or the Household Hazardous Waste Depot at the 908 Mullock Road, Whynott's Settlement.
  • Refillable propane tanks and tires must be returned to the dealer. Up to four tires may be returned at one time to a tire retailer.

 Wood Only
 Remove spikes, hinges longer than 6 inches, metal, vapour barrier and insulation from wood.

  • Boards
  • Plywood
  • Small pieces of wood (place in a box) 
  • Wooden furniture
  • Wooden windows cannot be accepted with wood, please place with landfill items.

Town of Bridgewater & Town of Mahone Bay

The maximum weight per item is 50 kilograms (110 pounds), maximum size for landfill/ metal and wood pile is 2 cubic metres (2.6 cubic yards). No item longer than 1.5 metres (5 feet).

Landfill

  • Furniture and carpet: cut longer pieces to a maximum 6 foot length. Please bundle carpet.
  • Mattresses and insulation: please bag or bundle pieces of insulation.
  • Windows (wood & vinyl).

ITEMS NOT COLLECTED

Electronics
TVs, VCRs, DVD players, computers, printers, home theatre systems, audio/visual systems are banned from landfill. They are recycled in Nova Scotia and must be dropped off at a depot. Drop them off free of charge at 908 Mullock Road in Whynott's Settlement or any registered depot. Full list of accepted items.

Tires 
Passenger tires cannot be collected during Clean Up. Drop off up to four tires at local tire retailer, at one time, free of charge.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)
Residents of the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg, Town of Mahone Bay and Town of Bridgewater may drop off the following for free: corrosives, explosives, flammables and poisons, unused paints, preservatives, waste oil, diesel fuel and BBQ propane tanks. The depot is located at 908 Mullock Road, Whynott's Settlement. Explosives such as fireworks, ammunition and flares are not accepted. Contact the RCMP at (902) 527-5555 or (902) 634-8674. Full list of accepted items. 

Asphalt Shingles

Shingles are not accepted during clean-up. Drop them off at the the Community Recycling Centre or any regulated construction and demolition waste facility. A tipping fee is charged. For more information about Clean Up, call (902) 543-2991.
